The Auditor is elected to a four-year term and officially assumes the office the first Monday in March. The auditor is the financial officer, the elections officer and takes the minutes for the county commission meetings.  

Auditor’s responsibilities:

  • Processing payroll
  • Accounts payable and receivable
  • Preparing the annual budget
  • Establishing real property tax levies
  • Apportioning of all tax collections to appropriate taxing districts
  • Monthly audits of all cash and cash items in the hands of the County Treasurer
  • Prepare Annual Financial Reports indicating the receipts and expenditures, liability, equity, and assets of the County and published as required by law.
  • The clerk for the Board of County Commissioners and keeps an accurate record of their official proceedings.
  • Preserves all documents, books, and records as required by law.
  • Performs all duties required by law relative to all County, State, and Federal elections held in the County.
  • Maintains all records of voter registration and election history.

 

 

Auditor's Election Duties:

  • Voter registration.
  • Ballot preparation.
  • Appointment and training of election officials.
  • Counting ballots with scanner equipment.
  • Canvassing and making abstracts of the votes cast.
  • Issue certificates of election.

 
Recommended Qualifications for the Office of County Auditor:

Knowledge of public administration; knowledge of general accounting principles and procedures; knowledge of basic data processing principles and methods; knowledge of South Dakota Codified Law relative to scope of responsibilities, including election law, property and real estate law, budgetary, accounting and payroll requirements, election and voter registration requirements and regulations' ability to supervise, motivate, train and instruct others; ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with others, either orally or in writing; and knowledge of general office methods and procedures.
